Downloading Internet Explorer for Local Installation

To start the process, navigate to the Internet Explorer download site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp).  The example used in this viewlet is for Internet Explorer 6.  The only difference with other versions will be the URL of the download.

Select the language to be used in the installation and click the button to begin the download.   The first file to be downloaded is a setup file, less than 500K in size.  When presented with the choice of opening the file or downloading it, select the download option.  Otherwise, the installation of Internet Explorer will be from the Microsoft web site.

After the setup file is downloaded, double-click it to run it.  A window will open where the user must agree to the Microsoft licensing agreement.  Click the radio button to acknowledge acceptance then click "Next."

The next screen will indicate that the site is initializing the setup.  After this is complete the Windows Update window appears, which gives the user the option of  installing immediately with a typical set of components or installing a minimum set of components or customizing the browser.  The latter option is the one desired, so check its radio button and click Next.

The next window allows the user to choose which components to download for a minimal installation.  In the case of downloading files for later installation, a full download will be done, so there is no need to make any selections.  Merely click the "Advanced" button.

On the next windows, check the box for "Download only" which will download the full set of components of Internet Explorer.  After this choice is selected, click "OK."  The component options window reappears, with all components checked.  The bottom of this window indicates the size of the download and the amount of time required for it assuming a 28.8K connection speed.  Click the "Next" button.

The next screen gives the user the opportunity to choose the operating system which the installation will run under.  Check the appropriate box then click the "Next" button.  Another screen will indicate that the site is preparing for the download.  It will be replaced by a progress monitoring screen with a blue bar graph indicating the amount of download completed and the approximate time remaining to complete the download.

When the download is completed.  A small window will appear notifying the user that the download is done.  It will tell the user that to install the browser, one must double-click the ie6setup.exe file in C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files.  Note that this is NOT the same ie6setup.exe file which was downloaded to start the process.  If that file is executed it will begin the download process from the Microsoft server again.   The download may install the files into a Windows Update Setup Files folder on another partition of the hard drive.  The completion window will specify its location.

In the event that partition C:\ is to be reformatted and the downloaded files are located there, the C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files folder must be copied to a different partition, from where they can be installed.
